AUTHORS INTRODUCTION
I welcome you to the fantasy world of STONE MIST. I world created over
five years ago by myself and a hardy band of crusaders who tackled the
world with bravery and adaptness. You will soon embark onto a quest that
will span the many continents of Stone Mist, through the Melash Sea to the
Evertmeet Desert, you will see the wonders and the evil of the world.
Stone Mist is very dear to my heart and since its creation years
ago, I've wished for people to adventure in my world. A world of medieval
nature and lore. A place where people are amazed by magic and are
enchanted by the fauna. This world, I call home, is haunted by images
of past horrors, by beasts of other universes, planes and the World Pool.
Stone Mist is a rich world with hundreds of persons, who if given the
chance would help anyone tip the scales in their constant struggle
against evil.
Stone Mist is at the same time a harsh and brutal world, where only
the people who ban together can survive. From the magical flow lines
to the constant dueling of ancient dragons, people who stay together,
fight together and survive together!
Stone Mist has lost none of its sheer size and terror when being ported
to the IBM. We managed to give the computer role players the game they
want. With a huge cast of non player characters to interact with you
will learn the lore of Stone Mist as well as discover, a most hideous
plot to destroy the Earth goddess! The story is developed through your
interaction with the inhabitants. Though, combat does occur, we do NOT
place an emphasis on it for character advancement! We believe role
playing is a balance of combat and interaction.
Explanations of the different Stone Mist cultures, races and the
world in general will release in a guidebook entitled," The Stone Mist
Worldbook." All material will help and aid the player in the
exploration and reunification of Stone Mist.
Currently available in a quarterly format is a design and programming
notebook on the development and continious refinement of the Stone Mist
series and also product information on the best fantasy role playing
shareware on the market. If you are interested in keeping up with the
industry and also have access to an insiders view on critical data then
this continuous series of booklets will benefit you greatly.
What is Stone Mist 2 ?
Stone Mist 2 is a 3/4 perspective, animated VGA role playing game. The
world is called Stone Mist, a huge medieval domain, similar in
technological achievements accomplished during Earths own Middle
Ages. All of Stone Mists gods, legends and lore are based on the
actual beliefs and superstitions of the people during the Middle

of Stone Mist.
Stone Mist is an entity, its own world, a world wracked by violence
looking for a hero.

Stone Mist Timeline and Time Keeping.
The people of Stone Mist keep track of time a little differently then we
do in our plane of existence. The clock is divided into 8 different time
segments, they are Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sexts, Nones, Vespers
and finally Compline. In Stone Mist there is no accurate clocks with
wheels and springs so the priests of the churchs use a general method
of keeping time. This timeline was adapted from the medieval period
of our own 15th century. This time keeping system originated from
St Benedict's Rule. It provided an ordering of the day for the monks.
Approximate times for the segments are:
Matins - Midnight
Lauds - 3 AM
Prime - 6 AM
Terce - 9 AM
Sexts - Noon
Nones - 3 PM
Vespers - 6 PM
Compline - 9 PM
A Walkthrough Trubador
Your journey begins in the locale village of Trubador. Trubador is
one of the few settlements that has to date been spared the wrath of
the evil onslaught.
Your first order of importance is to obtain some descent armor,
a good weapon and some healing herbs. The local shopkeepers actually
have a good assortment of different weapons for your character, so you
can keep coming back and buying more powerful weapons when you get
the extra gold!
You start the game with 1400 gold pieces.
Recommended beginning armorment:
1.) Short Sword (approx. 400 gold)
2.) Bronze Helmet (approx. 400 gold)
3.) Yserbus Heal (approx. 500 gold)
This provides your character with a balance offensive and
defense, so you can give the damage and also take it.
Your second task is to talk to EVERYONE. By talking to everybody,
you will learn a great deal about what is going on and what you
can do about it. In general, you should talk to everybody you
meet.
Now you will be ready to tackle the first in a series of tasks.
In Trubador there is a sewer that has been infested with creatures
driven by the Beast. Hidden in the sewer is also a key that will
allow you access to further a region of the game. The sewer is
located at (48,37)
After you've trounced the monsters in the sewers, your character
will be strong enough to tackle the monsters of the wild. Go
to the entrance of Trubador at (78,25) and click on the door icon
and you will then reappear on the outside of Trubador on the
main continent. Now head to the caverns North of Trubador and
talk to an important individual.
Good luck!
Authors Note
Save Games.
Multiple save games are only supported in the REGISTERED version
of Stone Mist 2. This is not an attempt to cripple Stone Mist in
any way but is the result of the method of distribution, shareware.
With shareware the game is put through many rigors, rezipping,
playing and then rezipping and then uploading it to a board. This
constant use, makes the saved games in many ways incompatable with
previous save games and vice-versa. Also many shareware users
do not like the idea of a game making, multiple nested directories
in order to necessitate four save games. We tried this with a
previous game of ours "Terradyne" and the number of technical
problems we encountered, where incredible. Basically any type of
problem that could be mentioned, we saw. Just because of the nature
of Stone Mist using large amounts of data, we must regretfully allow
only one save game, in the shareware version.
Player Input.
We need player input and suggestions on our games. How did you
enjoy Stone Mist? What did you like? What didn't sit with you
so well? Do you have any new ideas? Your opinions count, after all
who knows better than you? Let us know what you fell about
our games! Please send your comments and suggestions to:

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
**************************************************************************
This section discusses the most common technical, computer
related questions and problems encountered by Stone Mist 2 users.
If you have a problem running the game, or strange things happen
during play, look here for the answer. If you have any questions
regarding game play, please see the game play questions and
answers section.
Q: My mouse doen't seem to work with the game.
A: If the mouse pointer acts strange, doesn't appear, or
leaves 'garbage' on the screen, you probably need to get
an updated MOUSE DRIVER from the manufacturer of your
mouse.
Your mouse AND mouse driver must be 100% compatible.
Q: Program loads and then immediately quits to DOS with
the message "Exiting to Dos."
A: If you have MS-DOS 5.0 or BELOW, make a blank systems
disk (using the FORMAT A: /S command) and then upon
booting up your system, leave that disk in you boot drive.
If you have any questions on making a systems disk consult
your DOS manual.
MS-DOS 6.0 owners: Press F5 when your computer is booting up,
this will bypass your config.sys and autoexec. You still
may wish to make a custom systems disk that automatically
loads your mouse drivers and disk caches.
Q: The computer while playing, suddenly drops to DOS.
A: Missing sound files. Run "chkfile.exe"
The program "chkfile.exe" will then report to you
if any of the game files are missing!
Q: I just can't seem to get Stone Mist 2 to run under
Microsoft Windows 3.x.
A: Stone Mist 2 is not compatible with Windows 3.x. Both
Windows and Stone Mist are attempting to use privelaged
386 features, and Windows will not allow Stone Mist 2
run. Stone Mist 2 is a very graphics intensive program,
it will NOT run in a window.
Q: I get the music through my Micro Channel Adlib board,
but I can't get any sound effects during the game.
A: This is a strange problem with the Micro Channel Adlib
board that we are unable to solve.
Q: Will a math coprocessor chip speed up the performance of
Stone Mist 2.
A: No, it will not. We have already used optimized integer
math which is far faster than math math done with a
coprocessor. If you need better performance consider
upgrading your machine or adding an accelerator card.
Q: Can I run Stone Mist 2 from a RAM disk?
A: Yes, although it will not improve the game significantly,
because we try to load all the crucial tiles at
run time. But, make sure that you copy the save game
directories to your hard drive after your done playing.
Q: I've tried everything but Stone Mist 2 will not run
properly. The menu's will work sometimes but not the
main game.
A: You may have a 'mixed' DOS on your machine. MS-DOS consists
of three main files, COMMAND.COM, and two other hidden
DOS files. If all three of these files are not the same
version, you will have difficulty running Stone Mist and
other graphical programs.
Q: What is the best way to contact you?
A: The absolute best way is by mail. We read all
correspondences.
Bit Brother Software,
c/o Stone Mist 2 Letters.
#2 Winged Foot Way
Littleton CO 80123
or, you can reach us via these bullentin boards;
Good Neighbor BBS 303-422-7122, all baud rates.
Bit Brother Support Fall 1993, all baud rates.
Q: The colors on my game seem bad. The mountains, temples and
some of the dungeons are very dark.
A: Try adjusting the contrast and brightness on your monitor.
We use very subtle shades of grey that may not appear
correctly if you monitor adjustments are wrong.
Q: The keyboard controls seem sluggish.
A: Stone Mist only uses the keyboard as secondary input device,
and though usually quick, the program can become bogged
down by user input, on slower machines.
Q: Does Stone Mist 2 have a demo mode?
A: No. There is no built in demo. However available shortly,
will be a seperate stand-alone demo.
Q: Stone Mist seems to slow down every now and then.
A: Stone Mist loads large amounts of data from the disk at a time.
We recommend that you obtain a disk cache of some type. These
disk caches speed up performance dramatically. This caches
buffer up data, so the programs don't always have read the
disk for information.
If you have DOS 6.0 use the SMARTDRV.EXE program that comes
with it. Speeds up the game by over 35%
Another excellent cache is, FAST CACHE. Produced by Bloc
Publishing.
There is also an excellent shareware cache. HYPERDISK. Well
worth the investment if you want better performance.
Q: Stone Mist 2 doesn't work with Stacker installed on my system.
A: Our graphic files do not support STACKER. Unfortuantely our
compression format does not allow our tiles to be stored on
a stacked drive.
Install Stone Mist 2 on a non-stacked drive.
MS-DOS 6.0 compression. Stone Mist 2 will work without problems
on a drive compressed under MS-DOS 6.0.
Super-Stor products are fully supported.
Q: I have a VGA card and the configuration screens appear normal,
but once the intro sequence runs I get screwy graphics.
A: You probably have a "software" only VGA card like the ATI VIP
card. These older cards are not 100% compatible and will not
run much of today's VGA software. If you have an older card
you may want to upgrade. These, days VGA cards are available
from $40 on up.
Q: Does Stone Mist 2 have a multi-player, multi-character or
network version available?
A: Not yet. This is something that we would really like to do,
but have yet to schedule a release date for it.
